Toric Contact Lenses
Before we get into what Toric Contact Lenses are, it might be easier to start with what they do. Toric Contact Lenses are used to correct an eye condition called astigmatism.
Astigmatism is an optical malfunction caused by a misshaping of either the cornea or the optic lens (lenticular astigmatism). A normal cornea has a round in shape like a ball. In an astigmatic, the shape is different, more like a rugby ball or football.
People who sufferer astigmatism experience slightly blurred vision and can also sometimes experience headaches and eye aches.
This is where toric contact lenses come in as a solution to astigmatism. They can be either soft or Rigid Gas Permeable . Toric lenses differ from regular contact lenses in that they have two powers in one lens, one to treat the astigmatism and the other to treat either short-sightedness (myopia) or long-sightedness (hypermetropia).
In an astigmatic eye, the lens needs to stay in a specific location on the eye in order to correct the astigmatism. In a toric lens, this is achieved by weighting the lens so that the bottom is heavier than the top. As a result of this special manufacturing process, toric lenses tend to me much more expensive (sometimes up to twice as much) than other types of contact lenses.
Toric lenses are available for a daily, 1-2 Week and up to 1-3 month disposal schedule. Toric Colors Contact Lenses are also available. |
